Ancient Greek travelers created the list of Seven Wonders over 2,000 years ago. At that time, the Great Pyramid was already 2,000 years old. Most other structures on the list were much younger and less durable. For example, the Colossus of Rhodes fell during an earthquake only 54 years after it was built. The pyramid survives because of its shape and weight. A pyramid has a very low center of gravity which makes it extremely stable. It is made of about 2.3 million stone blocks weighing a total of 6 million tons. This massive weight keeps the structure from moving during earthquakes. The Great Pyramid was the tallest man-made structure in the world for over 3,800 years. It lost this title in 1311 when the Lincoln Cathedral was finished in England. The base of the pyramid covers 13 acres of land. This is enough space to fit nearly ten football fields inside its footprint. The quality of the construction helps it resist wind and sand erosion. While other wonders exist only in history books, the Great Pyramid remains physically intact. It continues to be one of the largest and heaviest buildings on Earth.
