How do wolf packs work?
A wolf pack is a family made of parents and their children.
Most packs do not have a boss who fought to the top. The leaders are simply the mother and father wolves. The older siblings help the parents raise the younger pups and hunt for food.

Dr. L. David Mech is a scientist who studied wolves for many years. In 1999, he published research showing that the idea of an 'alpha' wolf is a myth. In the wild, wolves do not fight each other to become the leader. Instead, they follow their parents just like human children do.Most wolf packs have between 5 and 11 members. In 2001, a famous group called the Druid Peak pack in Yellowstone National Park grew to 37 members. This happened because there was plenty of food for everyone to eat. Wolves can travel 50 miles in one day to find prey.Wolves have a sense of smell that is 100 times stronger than a human's sense of smell. They can smell an animal from over 1.5 miles away. They also use howls to talk to each other. A howl can be heard 10 miles away in open areas.Howling helps the family find each other if they get lost. It also tells other wolf families to stay away from their home. If a wolf is too old or hurt to hunt, the younger wolves bring it food. This cooperation helps the whole family survive.
