Which planet has the most moons?

Saturn has 146 moons, which is more than any other planet in our solar system.

Saturn's strong gravity pulls in passing space rocks and keeps them trapped in orbit. These moons vary in size from the giant Titan to small rocks the size of a sports stadium.

In May 2023, the International Astronomical Union confirmed 62 new moons around Saturn. This brought the total count to 146, passing Jupiter's 95 moons. A team led by Edward Ashton found these moons using data from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. The researchers used a method called shift and stack to find faint objects. This involves moving many images at the same speed a moon would move. When the images are layered together, the faint moons become bright enough to see. Most of these new moons are irregular, meaning they have tilted or oval-shaped orbits.Saturn's largest moon, Titan, contains 96% of the mass orbiting the planet. It is the only moon in our solar system with a thick atmosphere made mostly of nitrogen. Another moon called Enceladus has a hidden ocean that shoots water ice into space. The Cassini spacecraft saw these plumes during its mission. Some small moons are called shepherd moons because they help keep Saturn's rings in place. They use their gravity to guide ring particles and create gaps in the rings. Many of the smaller moons are likely pieces of larger moons that broke apart during crashes long ago.Saturn's rings are also made of millions of tiny ice pieces. These pieces act like micro-moons but are not counted in the official total. NASA plans to send a mission called Dragonfly to Titan in the future. This drone-like craft will look for chemicals that are necessary for life.
