The Dead Sea sits at the lowest point on Earth, about 430 meters below sea level. It is located between Jordan and Israel. Water flows into the lake from the Jordan River but has no way to flow out. The intense heat causes the water to evaporate, leaving behind massive amounts of salt and minerals.The water in the Dead Sea is nearly 10 times saltier than the ocean. It contains about 342 grams of salt for every kilogram of water. This makes the water weigh about 1.24 kilograms per liter. The average human body weighs about 0.98 kilograms per liter. Because the water is heavier than the person, it pushes the body upward.This upward push is called buoyancy. It is so strong in the Dead Sea that people find it hard to stand up straight or push their arms underwater. The water feels oily because it is full of minerals like magnesium and potassium. Most fish and plants cannot live in such salty water, which is why it is called the Dead Sea.Only specific bacteria and fungi can survive in these conditions. The lake is currently shrinking by about one meter every year. As the water disappears, the remaining liquid becomes even saltier and denser.
