Are there white strawberries?

Pineberries are real strawberries that look like they are inside out and taste exactly like pineapple.

These berries are white with bright red seeds. They are a natural mix of two wild strawberry types and are not made in a lab.

The Pineberry is a mix of two wild plants: Fragaria chiloensis from South America and Fragaria virginiana from North America. These are the same ancestors that gave us the common red strawberry. Dutch farmers saved this unique fruit from disappearing in the early 2000s and started selling it to the public around 2010.The white color happens because the berry lacks a pigment called anthocyanin. This is the same stuff that makes blueberries blue and regular strawberries red. Because they don't have a specific protein called Fra a 1, some people who are allergic to red strawberries can actually eat Pineberries without getting sick. The pineapple flavor comes from a special mix of natural sugars and aromatic chemicals. One of these chemicals is called 4-hydroxy-2,5-dimethyl-3(2H)-furanone. Even though they taste like a different fruit, they are 100% strawberry. These berries are quite small, usually only 15 to 23 millimeters wide. They are harder to grow than red strawberries because they produce less fruit on each plant. They also need a regular red strawberry plant nearby to help them grow through pollination. Because they are soft and spoil quickly, they are often considered a rare treat in grocery stores.
