In 1894, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg and his brother Will Keith Kellogg were looking for healthy foods for patients at the Battle Creek Sanitarium. They accidentally left cooked wheat out, and it became stale. When they pushed the grain through rollers, it turned into thin flakes instead of flat dough. They baked the flakes and found that the patients enjoyed the crunchy texture. The brothers started the Sanitas Nut Food Company in 1896 to sell their invention. Will Kellogg later found that corn made a tastier and crispier flake than wheat. He wanted to sell the cereal to everyone, but John wanted to keep it as a health food for patients. In 1906, Will started his own company which eventually became the Kellogg Company. Will made the cereal more popular by adding sugar to the recipe. He also spent a lot of money on ads to help people recognize the brand. He put his signature on every box so customers knew they were buying the original product. Today, the company makes billions of bowls of cereal every year.
